Caring For Jewellery
Caring For Jewellery
There is a lot of written material on how to care and look after jewellery. We have searched high and low for the ultimate guide to help give the right advice. The following is a summary of what we have found, and it is basic common sense. The key thing to remember is that gems make the caring of jewellery slightly more complicated.
1. Chemicals can affect gems and even precious metal.
Many household-cleaning products including bleach and other cleaning preparations will stain silver and discolour some gems. The best advise is not to expose jewellery to any household cleaning product but also to remember not put hairspray, deodorant, perfume or other personal care products on jewellery.
2. Direct exposure to sun light and heat can change the properties of gems.
Remembering that gems are made up of chemical elements themselves, these components react to heat and sunlight. Some of the gems that become paler when exposed to sunlight include Amethyst, Aquamarine, Aventurine, and Smokey quartz. Some gems like Citrine or amatrine may even change colour.
3. Strong smelling foods e.g. fish & onions can tarnish gold and silver.
When cooking one can expose jewellery to a number of strong substances, which can affect the metal or gems, apart from the grime that can get into the jewellery! The best advise is not to wear jewellery which is likely to be exposed to these substances in particularly rings.
4. Don’t expose jewellery to dirt and grime as in gardening.
Jewellery is intended to be used as decorative item and any activities where it is likely to come into contact with mud, sand, grease or other type of soil will inevitably affect it.
5. Wearing jewellery where it might catch in your clothes
Because jewellery is delicate and may sometimes have some fine and small pieces jutting out, it is important that clothes don’t catch the jewellery. It is always best to leave jewellery until last when dressing up.
